Contaminants on the floor, including water, are the leading cause of slips and falls, according to research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Almost half (48%) result in sprains and strains and 8% result in fractures.
If you turn the machine on while it’s in this state, then there’s a very good chance that the water will cause a short-circuit and fry the board or damage other delicate items such as the processor. That’s why it’s absolutely essential to wait until the laptop has had time to dry out.
Remove water as quickly as possible. This might seem obvious, but if at all possible, don’t leave it to the air alone to do the job of drying out your carpet. Use absorbent towels and steady blotting pressure (don’t rub) to sop up as much water as you can. Use fans to speed up carpet drying process.
Don’t bother leaving the whole computer in rice—air drying will work better and you won’t risk getting grains caught inside the machine. – Let it air dry for at least 24 hours—the longer the better.

The longer the water is in contact with the hardwood flooring, the more it can be absorbed into the wood, causing further damage to your hardwood flooring. Water can also leak into the cracks between the floorboards, causing moisture to absorb into the subflooring beneath the hardwood floorboards.
Both are correct, but they emphasize different things.

Turn It Off…
Physically unplug the power cable and then press and hold the power button for at least five seconds so the machine completely shuts down. Leaving the machine on – even for a few minutes more – can cause short circuits which damage internal components in your computer.
If you are noticing water coming up onto your carpet, there may be a foundation leak somewhere. Or, there may be a busted pipe somewhere in your home. It is also possible that your home may be having a difficult time dealing with the rain.
How long does it take for water damage to dry? It depends on several factors, but in general, you can expect areas in your home exposed to water or moisture to dry in about five days. Sometimes it takes as little as two days to dry an area and other times it could take several weeks.
Your carpet will be only slightly damp to the touch after your cleaning. Most carpets typically need 6-10 hours to dry completely.
Place upside down so that any excess liquid that you couldn’t reach will drain out. Cover the device with the product for at least 12 hours, turning the product over every 1 or 2 hours, or as often as possible. Note that larger items, such as cameras, could take up to a week to dry.
If you’ve just spilled a liquid on your best laptop, time is of the essence. You absolutely must turn your computer off immediately and unplug it. If you have a removable battery, remove it immediately.
