What are preauricular pits? Preauricular pits are also known as preauricular cysts, fissures, or sinuses. A pit is essentially a sinus tract traveling under the skin that doesn’t belong there; it’s marked by a tiny opening to the tract, right in front of the ear and above the ear canal.
It is also termed as preauricular pit, preauricular fistula, preauricular tract and preauricular cyst. It has an estimated incidence of 0.1–0.9% in the general population.
Frequency of preauricular sinus differs depending the population: 0.1–0.9% in the US, 0.9% in the UK, and 4–10% in Asia and parts of Africa. Preauricular sinuses are inherited features, and frequently appear next to both ears.
All in all, people around the world have used the butterfly symbol to represent life, hope, change, and endurance.
An opening left in the wall of a steeple, tower, barn, etc. to allow light to enter.
The Theory of Holes. Roughly, the theory can be summarized as follows: A person’s essence — their fundamental being or true nature — rests unacknowledged underneath all the psychological content of the ego. A “hole” is the absence of a specific aspect of our essence.
A preauricular sinus appears as a very small pit just in front of the external ear (see figure 1). Most people with preauricular sinuses are completely asymptomatic. However, these sinuses can drain a foul smelling discharge, and when this happens, they are prone to chronic infection.
Preauricular pits are usually harmless and typically don’t cause any health issues. Sometimes, they become infected and require a course of antibiotics. If your child has preauricular pits that regularly become infected, your child’s doctor may recommend surgery to remove the pit and connected tract.
Clinical presentations of preauricular sinus abscess are usually recurrent ear discharge, pain, swelling, itching, headache and fever.
These malformations form in the womb around the sixth week of pregnancy when the outer ear takes shape. There is often a problem with the fusion of the tissue, causing the pit. The exact cause is unknown, but genetic factors may contribute to the preauricular pits, especially if they’re present on both ears.
Preauricular sinuses are inherited in an incomplete autosomal dominant pattern, with reduced penetrance and variable power of expression. They can arise spontaneously. The sinus may be bilateral in 25-50% of cases, and bilateral sinuses are more likely to be hereditary.
Branchiootorenal (BOR) syndrome is characterized by pits or ear tags in front of the outer ear (preauricular pits), abnormal passages from the throat to the outside surface of the neck (branchial fistulas), branchial cysts, malformations of the outer, middle and inner ear, hearing loss and kidney (renal) abnormalities.
Causes. The external ear forms early in development when six soft tissue swellings (hillocks) fuse together. When the soft tissue fuses together incorrectly, additional appendages may form in front of the ear. These are called preauricular tags and are comprised of skin, fat or cartilage.
An acutely infected preauricular sinus was first treated with a course of antibiotics. Any abscess was incised and drained as close to the sinus pit to facilitate future excision, and operation was delayed until signs of inflammation subsided.

The good news is that dreaming about a crush represents doors of possibility opening up in your life, says Arzt. “You may be excited about the idea of being with your crush, but it can also mean you’re excited about anything else that lies ahead,” she says. “Dreams can shed insight into your desires.
Most commonly, a hole in a dream is thought to be an analogy that represents your awareness of feeling empty, hollow, or incomplete. It symbolizes something that is missing in your life, a feeling of being lost, or being trapped.
A hole physically exists in that it is the absence of an electron. Just like a hole in a piece of paper physically exists. However, if you are asking whether the hole is a particle, then no, it does not physically exist.
A black hole spontaneously emits elementary particles. The typical energy of these particles is proportional to Planck’s constant, so the effect is purely quantum mechanical in nature, and the rate of particle emission by a black hole of astronomical size is extraordinarily small, far too small to be detected.
How do you keep a preauricular pit clean? Preauricular pits that have no added complications can be cleaned in the same way as the rest of your body—with regular soap and water. No special attention to cleaning is necessary.
The Excision of the Preauricular Sinus involves an incision around the sinus and subsequent dissection of the tract to the cyst near the helix The recovery period after an excision of Preauricular Sinus generally takes between 1 and 2 weeks, but sometimes can take as long as 3 weeks.
